Travelling with bike

Ill be taking my bike, XL Commencal Meta TR 29, to Nelson from Auckland next week, and to Queenstown from Auckland in March. Whats peoples experiences/ advice with packing their bike to be checked on board? Do you use the $25 airnz bike boxes, or a bike bag like the ground effect Tardis?
